With traditional timber beam houses overlooking the Rhine river and bountiful gardens and floral arrangements, few cities are as scenic or relaxing.
Here are some of the top things to do. Simply hop in your rental car in Strasbourg and explore.
Climb to the top of Strasbourg cathedral
Strasbourg’s cathedral is renowned for its beauty. This spellbinding Gothic structure has stood for many centuries – and was the world’s tallest building for two of those.
You can climb 320 steps to reach a viewing platform that offers an incredible view over Strasbourg. You should even be able to see over the border into Germany if the weather is clear.
Head back inside to enjoy the stunning stained glass windows that date back to the 13th Century. Its rosette window is particularly beautiful, featuring an array of incredible colours that could rival Paris’s Notre Dame.
There is also an Astronomical Clock within the cathedral, which was created in the 1500s. At 12.30pm every day, you can witness a procession of figures moving around a small statue of Jesus.
Take a walk along the canal
This dreamy setting is perfect for a slow spring or summer stroll in the shade of the trees.
Enjoy the greenery, soak up the sounds of nature and watch boats glide by in the still water. Grab some traditional bretzels – tasty, salty dough twists - and some pastries to take along and enjoy. Fournil d’Asterlitz and Au Pain de Mon Grand Pere are two recommended spots to pick up a bite to eat.
Check out the annual light shows
Plan your trip between July and September to enjoy the annual light show that takes place after dark during these months.
The cathedral and the Barrage Vauban (a bridge over the river) are lit up with a spectacular display that changes each year. The light shows typically last around 10 minutes and take place throughout the evening, so you can take in these beautiful sights at your leisure.
Explore the La Petite-France district
This vibrant area of the city boasts plenty of restaurants, cafes and boutiques to enjoy on an afternoon.
Stop for a drink in a restaurant overlooking the river, sample the delicacies on offer in the many stores and cafes or pick up a souvenir to take home at the end of your trip.
Many of the buildings in this district were constructed way back in the 16th and 17th centuries and still stand proud today. You’ll also find the 14th Century towers here, which were constructed to protect the city in medieval times.
Take a boat tour
See the city from a whole other perspective with a boat tour along the canals around the old town, the ‘Grande Ile’, which is essentially an island.
Enjoy a relaxing ride overlooking the pretty buildings along the canal edge and take advantage of the open-top boats on sunnier days.
