Stuttgart is a fascinating city packed with intriguing modern and historic architecture.
Not too far beyond it, there are many other attractions and sights to see too. Experience it all with car rental from Stuttgart Airport.
City sights
Stuttgart has multiple city centre attractions, not least the Schlossplatz Stuttgart – or Palace Square.
The hub of the city, the square is an ideal place to relax for a while and is within close reach of other popular sights. The pleasing and vast square features open lawns, the Jubilee Column, the New Palace and fountains that are lit at night. As well as being an architectural gem, the New Palace is also home to the Baden-Württemberg state government.
The Palace Square is often used for open-air concerts and is transformed each year for Stuttgart’s Summer Festival.
Shoppers will love Konigstrasse, which passes by the square and is one of Germany’s longest pedestrianised streets. The historic Königsbau arcade is also extremely attractive and packed with cafes and shops.
A similarly worthy building, the Old Castle, is home to Stuttgart’s Württemberg State Museum, which offers fascinating insights into the history of the local region. Also gaining a great deal of attention – and well worth a visit – are the highly thought of Mercedes Benz and Porsche museums.
Serene nature and epic heights
Those more interested in nature may prefer the Wilhelma botanic garden and zoo. It has around 9,000 animals, a famous coral fish collection and impressive orchid display to behold.
For stunning views across the whole of Stuttgart’s skyline and beyond, meanwhile, Stuttgart Television Tower is the place to be. At 217 metres tall, it offers unrivalled panoramic views over Stuttgart, the vineyards of the Neckar Valley and as far as the Black Forest in the distance.
Hohenzollern Castle
It would be difficult to argue that Hohenzollern Castle is anything other than one of the most impressive sights in Germany.
This picture-perfect hilltop fortress, around 70 km south of Stuttgart, is unforgettable to behold, and the views from it worth the visit on their own.
The partially four-lane B27 runs close to the foothills of the castle, which is open year-round, with guided tours also available. Many special events are also held there – just check for details before your visit.
Visit the university town of Tubingen
A trip on a quaint Stocherkahn boat through Tubingen makes for a memorable day out.
The prestigious university town has the Neckar River running through it, providing a picturesque spine, dotted with colourful and historic buildings. Narrow alleyways and pointed gables characterise the town, which has a beautifully restored medieval centre.
