Campania’s carefree capital is a great spot for finding treasures to explore on your Italian vacation, when you rent a car in Salerno.
Whether you love culture, tranquillity or soaking up the sunshine, there’s something for everyone within driving distance.
Inspiring architecture
Salerno may not be the most famous city on the lush western shores of Italy, but its architecture competes with the greats. Salerno Cathedral is the prize attraction, where ornate interiors glisten red and gold.
These mysterious chambers house the relics of St Matthew, but there’s also plenty to admire from the outside. The cathedral was built in the 11th century and one hundred years later, the Porta dei Leoni was erected at the entrance. Lions guard the sacred sites of this building, including the Roman tombs lining the walls.
A little further out of town, you can see the wonders of Arechi Castle. This medieval fortress is spectacularly situated 300 metres above the sea, offering some of the best views in Salerno.
Fabled gardens
The Garden of Minerva is more than just an ornamental retreat. Historical and botanical, the gardens date back many centuries and were originally founded to serve one of the world’s oldest medical schools.
Today the gardens are quiet and intriguing – you can enjoy a herbal tea from the outdoor bar or tour medical exhibits featuring early texts and surgical equipment.
If you’d rather not delve into medical history, try the city’s other star park. The Municipal Garden, or Villa Comunale, features a fountain that has stood since 1790. In the winter months, this space is transformed into an enchanting space where luminous artwork lights the way.
Fascinating museums
Salerno’s Centro Storico is jam-packed with incredible museums and the Provincial Archaeological Museum is one of the best. Recently restored, this time capsule is home to incredible treasures including the bronze head of Apollo – a mysterious sculpture found in the ocean more than 70 years ago.
The city is also home to an art house with six galleries spanning several eras. Some works feature local artist depictions of the incredible local scenery.
If you enjoyed the Garden of Minerva, there are more treasures to be found at the Virtual Museum of Salerno’s Medical School. Small interactive displays delve into the harsh and sometimes torturous world of medieval medicine.
The stunning Amalfi Coast
While you’re in Salerno, the stunning Amalfi Coast is simply unmissable. In less than an hour, you can reach the heart of the coastal beauty, including iconic colourful cliffside towns, idyllic beaches and some of the best scenic drives in Europe.
The clifftop gardens at Ravello make it one of the best towns to visit, while Positano is known for its lively beaches. Amalfi is another natural favourite, with an incredibly deep history for such a tiny village. There’s an ornate cathedral, a colourful Moorish villa and even the Museum of Paper.
Exploring Italy with a rental car in Salerno is the best way to see every incredible location.
