Discover Roman history
Verona is home to one of the most well-preserved structures from the Roman era – the ancient Verona Arena. Originally constructed in 100AD, this large, open-air amphitheatre once held 30,000 spectators.
Visit to marvel at its massive oval structure and imagine the atmosphere during the notorious gladiator battles. It’s said to have been one of the largest venues in the whole of the Roman Empire.
Verona has made this historical site even more special with an annual summer opera festival. Join thousands of music fans in August for a packed line-up of local and international opera stars. Sit down to several spectacular performances and watch this amphitheatre come to life.
Medieval marvels
On the banks of the Adige River is the medieval Castelvecchio. With a 14th-century, arched stone bridge, the castle’s exterior is as grand as the inside. It was first built during the time of the Scaliger Empire in the 12th Century.
Forward-thinking Italian architect Carlo Scarpa modernized parts of the structure by including 14th-century glass panels and medieval touches to the interior between 1959 and 1973.
Venture inside to marvel at the fascinating collection of artifacts, frescos and historic jewellery. There’s a fantastic collection of statues and paintings to admire too, including work from Venetian painter Michele Giambono.
Shakespearean romance
No trip to the city is complete without taking the opportunity to peer up at Juliet’s Balcony. Situated within the Casa di Giulietta Museum, explore this interesting attraction to learn more about Shakespeare’s iconic love story and get a photo of this famous literary landmark.
See the famous balcony and pay tribute to Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet at the replica of Nereo Costantini’s Statue of Juliet. The tragedy is said to be based on true events, where star-crossed lovers from feuding families fell in love during the 1300s.
Nicknamed the ‘tower of love’, the popular Torre del Lamberti bell tower offers exceptional views across the sun-kissed city and into the Italian countryside. This 84-metre tall stone structure took many years to construct. Work began in the 12th century, but it wasn’t until 1463 when the first bell was rung out across the region. This was because a lightning storm caused the tower to collapse.
Climb the steps to the top of the tower to take in the great beauty beyond, with magnificent views across the landscape.
