There’s a lot more to San Diego than having fun at the beach. Thanks to the city’s rich history you’ll find lots of cultural attractions, fascinating museums and art galleries. San Diego is also one of America’s top family-friendly destinations, with theme parks, a world-famous zoo and lots of lovely parks.
See wildlife and art in Balboa Park
You can’t visit San Diego without taking in Balboa Park, a vast 1,200-acre public park that’s home to over a dozen major museums - and the city’s world-famous zoo. You could easily spend a whole day here strolling through the lush gardens and admiring the historic architecture, so it’s worth signing up for a segway or walking tour to ensure you see it all.
Among the many museums in Balboa Park is the renowned San Diego Museum of Art, the largest in the region. Here you can admire the expansive collection of art from Spanish and Italian old masters, as well as 19th-century American paintings and sculptures.
Arguably, the highlight of Balboa Park is the San Diego Zoo. Pioneering the idea of cageless, open-air habitats for its huge variety of animal residents, it’s won awards for its conservation efforts. The giant pandas are a major draw here. You can take part in one of their animal experiences, such as being a keeper for the day or a walk round at sunrise before the park officially opens to the public.
Experience life in the US Navy
Another big city highlight is the monumental USS Midway, the longest-serving aircraft carrier in -
US Navy history – and once the largest ship in the world. Climb aboard for a fascinating insight into navy life during the years after World War Two.
Among the highlights are the first-hand accounts of the docents, many of whom served on the Midway, and more than 25 aircraft on display. If you've got little ones in tow, you can also book the ‘Little Skippers Overnight Adventure’, one of the Midway’s many fun learning experiences.
Shop in style in the Gaslamp Quarter
The historic heart of San Diego is the Gaslamp Quarter, which combines charming Victorian architecture with a vibrant 21st-century entertainment and shopping scene. This atmospheric area is home to more than 100 restaurants, live music venues, boutiques and stores.
Have fun at the beach
You’re never far from the beach in San Diego. One of the best is Mission Beach, a three-kilometre stretch of urban sand fronted by a paved walk that’s frequented by rollerbladers, cyclists, skateboarders and joggers, offering a slice of Southern California beach life.
Another great beach is at Coronado, which lies across the bay from the Gaslamp Quarter. This was once the playground of Hollywood stars and you can call into the iconic Hotel Del Coronado for Sunday brunch while you soak up some of the resort’s glamorous history.
Visit the jewel in the city’s coastal crown
A 20-minute drive north is the appropriately named La Jolla (La Jolla means ‘the jewel’ in Spanish). This upscale beach town, perched on the cliffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean, is a real gem of a place to visit.
As well as its stunning location, there are excellent restaurants, some with glorious ocean views. Don’t miss the Legends Gallery, which has a collection of artwork by former resident Dr. Seuss.
