Known for major-league sports, unique New England cuisine and treasure trails packed with history, Boston is brimming with unique metropolitan charm. A thriving hub for science and technology, the city also has plenty of creative energy. There’s a museum for every interest and high-end stores offer a perfect slice of retail therapy.
Take the Freedom Trail
This four-kilometre path weaves through Downtown Boston, starting at picturesque Boston Common, then through to many key sites of historical importance, including the Massachusetts State House that crowns the local architecture.
There are plenty of different style tours you can go on, from the Walk into History® and North End tour to private and even customised walks. Each will give you an insight into what makes this trail so iconic.
The 18th-century Old State House is a must-see while taking in the Freedom Trail. This is framed by towering glass skyscrapers and showcases the mix of old and new that the city is known for. Be sure to snap a few pictures of this legendary Georgian building and step inside to explore the museum it houses.
Be sure to check out the Bunker Hill Monument at Charlestown, too. This towering granite obelisk commemorates the 1775 Battle of Bunker Hill. This battle formed part of the Siege of Boston in the early days of the American Revolutionary War. Climb 294 steps to the monument’s peak for breathtaking views over the city and harbour.
The trail will also take you to the Old South Meeting House – the place where the famous Boston Tea Party protest was planned. Take a walk through Boston’s oldest colonial-era house, then see religious buildings that document New England’s storied past. Simply follow the markings from Boston Common to start the journey.
The historic harbour
Boston’s famous waterfront is a relaxing spot to spend some time. Take a journey along the Harbourwalk to experience the quaint side of the Massachusetts capital.
This is a great place to sample authentic New England cuisine - from the street food outlets to the cosy restaurants tucked along the Inner Harbour. Clam chowder and lobster roll are local seafood specialities, as are Boston Baked Beans. You’ll find a unique Bostonian twist on each of the key north-eastern dishes – clam chowder comes with a thick, creamy and delicious broth in Boston.
Stroll along the seaport to see many star attractions, testimony to Boston’s innovative present and rich history. The USS Constitution is a historic wooden ship and naval museum. Step aboard to take a journey through the history of “Old Ironsides” and her role in important U.S. battles since 1797.
The New England Aquarium, Boston Tea Party Ships and the Boston Children’s Museum are all located at the historic harbourside, so there’s always a great place to enjoy family time. If you’re a creative traveller, you’re bound to love the Institute of Contemporary Art, where beautiful modern art sits beside tranquil harbour views.
