Portland’s industrial past has morphed into a trendy present, where the impressive Oregon environment takes centre stage. Whether you’re here for a short city stay or lengthy vacation, the beauty and star attractions of the city and beyond will have you amazed.
Forests, parks and nature
Portland is one of the greenest cities in the United States, where bicycles are popular and green spaces are no strange sight. This airy destination makes it easy to combine the romance of a city excursion with all the relaxation of a nature retreat.
Washington Park is a vast green space stretching across 400 acres of suburban Portland, where top attractions are tucked between centuries-old evergreens and red cedar trees.
These include the Portland Children’s Museum and the city’s star attraction, Oregon Zoo, which is home to endangered predators and educational exhibits. There’s even a family farm dedicated to the agricultural legacy of the surrounding valleys. You’ll also find the World Forestry Center tucked into this spellbinding park, where conservation is dedicated to flora and fauna.
Portland also has two beautiful eastern gardens. Its Japanese garden is situated on Washington Park’s northern ridge, while Lan Su Chinese Garden sits with pride in the heart of fashionable and lively Pearl District. This enclosed botanical haven showcases some of the most authentic Oriental landscaping outside of China.
The City of Roses also has an Urban Forest Reserve if you want to explore further afield. This park stretches for 12 kilometres and there are beautiful trials for hikers of all abilities. Further still, Mount Hood National Forest is breathtaking. The nearby Warm Springs Reservation offers a unique opportunity to journey into Native American culture – and through Oregon’s rich past.
Discover Portland’s artistic side
Portland may be known for its thriving commercial centers, but when business is done, a lively arts scene emerges in the city.
The creative and liberal spirits of Oregon are visible in the streets of Downtown, where old-world cinema signs add vibrancy to the laid-back streets. Head to the shores west of the Willamette River to find a dense, eclectic collection of artistic venues.
The Portland Art Museum is a highlight, where exhibits from Asia and Europe meet with a love for the local. The north-western and Native American collections are known for their depth, diversity and cultural insight.
For a modern twist, head to the PDX Contemporary Art gallery, or one of the independent theatres spread across both sides of the Willamette River, for a truly artistic experience.
The Oregon Coast
The nearby coastline is alluring and untamed – ideal for a beach holiday or day trip from the city.
The city of Astoria is one of the most accessible resorts, where ports and history sit side-by-side. Here you can see the famed Astoria Column, dine in cool eateries along the riverwalk or see history on a reel at the Oregon Film Museum.
Many stunning beaches stretch along the coast of northern Oregon, including some real treasures tucked between Seaside and Sunset Beach. The waters here are great for surfing and the beaches are unspoilt.
Cannon Beach is another favourite, known for its long, sandy shore framed by forested dunes. Oregon’s reputation as an eco-haven continues here – each year, tufted puffins nest on Haystack Rock. Further south on Depoe Bay you’ll find some of the best whale-watching points in the United States.
