Pittsburgh city centre – known as the Golden Triangle – sits at the point where the Allegheny and Monongahela Rivers join to form the Ohio River. This is where you’ll find the historic Point State Park, the lively Strip District and the Cultural District, home to many of the city’s theatres and performance venues.
Visit some of the country’s great museums
The Carnegie Museum of Art is one of the city’s great cultural institutions. Among the 30,000-plus objects on show are extensive collections of Impressionist and post-Impressionist paintings, 19th and 20th century American and European paintings, sculpture and decorative art, as well as Japanese prints, contemporary glass work, local artists and photography collections.
Next door is the Carnegie Museum of Natural History, which features an impressive collection of dinosaur fossils, including a complete Tyrannosaurus Rex and Triceratops and exhibits on cultural history. Kids will find plenty to keep them busy with interactive hands-on experiences.
The Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens is just down the road and worth a visit. The extensive gardens surround a Victorian glasshouse and include a Tropical Forest Conservatory.
High tech and pop art
Across the Allegheny River from the Golden Triangle is the huge Carnegie Science Center, with over 250 hands-on exhibits on everything from food production to space exploration. There’s plenty to keep you entertained, from the indoor climbing and zipline courses to a guided tour of a World War II submarine, the USS Requin.
You’ll find the Andy Warhol Museum in the North Shore neighborhood, which contains the world’s largest collection of work by Pittsburgh-born artist. The museum displays many of Warhol's drawings, paintings, prints, and multimedia installations, as well as films and video clips.
Take a trip around the Strip
At the north-east corner of the Golden Triangle is the Strip District, one of the city’s liveliest areas. The former warehouses have been restored and are now home to little boutiques, art galleries, markets and all kinds of eateries.
Here you will also find the Senator John Heinz History Center, which tells you everything you ever wanted to know about the Steel City, from its role in the French and Indian Wars to the city's proud association with Heinz Ketchup.
Catch a major league ball game
If you’re a football fan, then a visit to Heinz Field is a must. The home of the famous Pittsburgh Steelers stands on the North Shore with great views of the river.
Even if you’re not able to buy a ticket to a game, a stadium tour is still well worth paying a visit for. East of Heinz Field is PNC Park, home of Major League Baseball's Pittsburgh Pirates. Catching a game here is a real experience, with great pre-match entertainment and plenty of sidewalk cafes to enjoy.
Put the ‘fun’ into funicular
Don’t leave town without travelling on a funicular railway. The Duquesne Incline has been carrying residents up to the Duquesne Heights and Mount Washington districts since 1877.
You can travel in an original cable car today and marvel at the fantastic views out over the city, then head for dinner at one of Mount Washington’s many fine restaurants.
No matter what you’re looking for when visiting the city and surrounding areas, you’ll be able to see it all with Hertz car rental from Pittsburgh International Airport.
