The City of the Violet Crown is a thriving metropolis with a small-town soul. ‘Keep Austin Weird’ is the local mantra, and you’ll find plenty of personality in these animated streets. Beyond the bright lights and Tex-Mex eateries, there’s also a world of natural Texan wonder to explore.
Capitol attractions
Austin is home to the Texas State Capitol, a grand granite and marble building which houses the Senate chambers. This historical landmark is set in peaceful gardens between the Downtown and Northside districts. Stroll through the grounds to catch sight of the imposing Lorenzo de Zavala Texas State Library, reading the patriotic slogans carved into its facade.
Ten minutes’ walk from the library, the Bullock Texas State History Museum blows traditional exhibitions out of the park. Step inside and go on an interactive journey through every chapter of the Lone Star State. Watch traditional rodeo shows, feel the power of native bows and arrows and use multi-sensory screens to learn the languages of early Texas.
Displaying Austin’s creative flair, the Cathedral of Junk in the West Congress district is a lesser-known but truly fascinating point of interest. Found 15 minutes’ drive out of downtown Austin, this ever-growing park showcases quirky constructions and sculptures made out of discarded items ranging from tin cans to old bicycles.
Live music and fiery cuisine
With the most music venues per person, Austin is officially deemed the live music capital of the world. Most are clustered around 6th Street, just north of the Colorado River. During the day, this neighbourhood is relaxed and melodic. When night falls, they crank up the volume and turn on the lights.
This entertainment district is a playground for lively Texan culture, with Wild West-themed bars, karaoke joints and entertainment complexes buzzing late into the night. Live music isn’t limited to just one genre either – on most nights of the week you can hear blues, country and classical music spilling from the various venues.
One popular way to enjoy the live music scene is over dinner. Texas is famous for flame-grilled food, most of all its mouth-watering smoked brisket. In downtown Austin, you can sample this the traditional way or with a Mexican twist.
Waterfalls and the rugged nature
Texas is one of the best places in the United States to chase unspoilt wilderness. More than 80 per cent of the state is farmland, ranch or forest. In the city, Zilker Metropolitan Park is the best place to find serenity. However, lush sights of Texan paradise are not far from the city walls.
Hamilton Pool is one of the most iconic destinations, reached in around 45 minutes from downtown Austin by car. Here you can swim in gleaming aqua waters encircled by rugged limestone cliffs and tumbling waterfalls.
On the banks of the Colorado River, Mayfield Park is home to blooming flowers and majestic peacocks. Offering something more rustic, the Balcones Canyonlands National Wildlife Refuge is a sprawling expanse of cacti-flecked wilderness where you can hike and observe the local creatures.
With Austin car rental, there are no limits to the adventures you can plan. Take to the open road for your next big Texan vacation.
