The best things to do in Bilbao

Bilbao may not be as world-famous as the likes of Barcelona and Madrid. However, you’ll soon find that’s part of the charm of this extraordinary city of stunning architecture, breathtaking landscapes and mouthwatering cuisine.

Bilbao is in the heart of Spain’s Basque Country – and as you walk past the traditional townhouses on Casco Viejo, you’ll know you’re somewhere special. Whether you’re tucking into a plate of pintxos, taking in the mountainous views or rubbing shoulders with locals at a festival, the memories you’ll make in Bilbao will stay with you for ever. What’s more, the city is next to portside San Sebastian – so you’re only a short drive away from some of Spain’s best stretches of coast.

If you’re only in Bilbao for a short time, make the most of your trip by checking off these top things to see and do.

Look around the Guggenheim

The Guggenheim has been considered one of the most celebrated art museums since it opened in 1997. Designed by American-Canadian architect Frank Gehry – the man behind Los Angeles’ Walt Disney Concert Hall, Toronto’s Art Gallery of Ontario and Dusseldorf’s Neuer Zollhof complex – the building itself is a work of stunning beauty. Its curved titanium walls are meant to represent the outline of the Nervion River.

Inside, you can admire one-of-a-kind sculptures from Jeff Koons, and world-famous artworks by the likes of Yves Klein, Anish Kapoor and Anselm Kiefer. With permanent and rolling exhibits, there's always something spectacular to view at the Guggenheim.

The museum overlooks the Estuary of Bilbao next to the La Salve Bridge. Outside, you’ll find sculptures on the waterfront including the Maman – a large spider by Louise Bourgeois.

Another notable statue is Puppy – a living sculpture at the front of the museum. Created by Jeff Koons, this 40 foot tall West Highland Terrier is covered in colourful flowers. Its coat is replanted twice a year with fresh fragrant bouquets.

Discover treasures at the Bilbao Fine Arts Museum

Bilbao’s Fine Art Museum is more than just somewhere to spend a few hours out of the hot Spanish sun. It’s a place to digest some of the most perspective-changing artworks of the past millennia.

Here you'll find paintings and sculptures that date as far back as the 12th century up to the modern day. From religious works to renaissance masterpieces, through to pastoral watercolours, there’s something here for every palate.

Bilbao’s Fine Art Museum is within walking distance of the Guggenheim, so you can easily cover both in the same day. It also overlooks Casilda Iturrizar park in the north of the city, so you can go for a walk afterwards – or visit the nearby shopping area.

Admire Bilbao Cathedral

Catedral Santiago de Bilbao is a key part of the city's religious heritage. With a construction period spanning several centuries, the building’s neo-gothic structure contrasts with its tower, which dates back to the 19th century. This mixed history is reflected inside – a fusion of Latin, Spanish and French styles.

The cathedral also hosts a number of concerts and exhibits throughout the year – so your visit could be well-timed if you plan ahead. Head through the cloisters and underneath the stone arches and you’ll arrive in some glorious gardens – perfect for soaking up the rays in style.

Explore San Mames Stadium

Looming large over the city skyline is the imposing San Mames Stadium – the home of Athletic Bilbao football club. Since it opened in 1931, it’s hosted hundreds of sporting events – and continues to bring in crowds of over 50,000 every week when Los Leones are in action.

This stadium lights up the cityscape from afar – its modern design and multi-coloured façade contrasting sharply with the significantly older surrounding buildings.

If you want to go see a game, you should book in advance. The best place to park is next to Bilbao University at the Parking Santiago Apostol on Gurtubay Road, which is less than five minutes’ walk away.

Take in the view from Mirador Arraiz

One of the best ways to get your bearings in a city is by looking down on it from above. Mirador Arraiz's observation deck offers the perfect vantage point from south-west Bilbao.

To get there, follow the AP-8 past San Mames Arena and take Exit 5 onto the BI-636, then head up Kobeta to the top of the mountain. If you’re visiting in July, there’s a chance you’ll get to see Bilbao BBK Live – a music festival which takes over the city.

Sample delicious Pintxos

Spain’s Basque Country is known around the world for its food. While you’re here, make sure you sample Pintxos. Literally translated as ‘tooth pick food’, these bite-sized treats are usually provided in bars and restaurants. Enjoy crusty sliced bread with layered meats, cheese and sauces. Anchovies, cured Spanish meat, peppers and eggs are popular toppings. Visit the popular Plaza Nueva for outdoor seating and all the Pintxos you can eat.

With delicious food, inspirational art and tastebud-tantalising food, Bilbao is a treasure of the Basque Country. Explore it all on your own terms with Hertz car rental.
