Enfield makes a great base for exploring London, but also has a few attractions of its own that are well worth a visit. Here’s our quick guide to a few of its highlights.
Tranquil spaces
Enfield offers you a fantastic opportunity to escape the bustle of the city in the form of its peaceful parks and gardens. It’s only a short drive from the town centre to Trent Park, an area of meadows and woodlands forming part of London’s Green Belt, a protected area of countryside around the outskirts of the city.
Once a royal hunting ground, Trent Park is now a haven for wildlife and is the perfect place to take a walk, relax with a picnic or even practise your swing at its golf club. Located just off the M25, it’s easy to reach in your rental car with plenty of free parking available.
Also situated just a short drive from Enfield is Forty Hall, a historic home that’s stood at the edge of London since 1632. Walk through its picturesque grounds or step inside the manor house to see its living quarters, beautifully preserved and recreated to look just as they would have done in the 17th century. The site also offers an orchard, vineyard and even a farm.
Get active
Enfield is the ideal base for days out in Lee Valley Park, which runs all the way from Hertfordshire to the River Thames. Having spent decades as a neglected industrial landscape, the land has been carefully renovated and restored in recent years. It was home to many London 2012 Olympic venues, including Lee Valley VeloPark, one of the world’s most renowned cycling hubs.
Visit the park to try your hand at everything from BMX racing to track cycling, as well as ice skating and even white-water rafting. If you’re looking for a more relaxing day then there are plenty of walking trails, parks and gardens, along with cafés and rowing boats for hire.
London calling
When you rent a car in Enfield, it’s easy to head into London and enjoy all the fantastic attractions that the UK capital has to offer. The city is home to so many world-class theatres, galleries, restaurants and historic sights that it’s impossible to fit everything into just one day. Luckily, many of the city’s biggest attractions are situated close together in the West End, allowing you to tick off a few bucket-list sights in a single day.
One great way to see the sights is to head for the South Bank and take a trip on the London Eye. This 135-metre Ferris Wheel offers you the chance to see landmarks including Big Ben, the Houses of Parliament and St Paul’s Cathedral.
Afterwards, cross Westminster Bridge to the north side of the river and take a stroll along The Mall from Trafalgar Square to Buckingham Palace, before heading to Covent Garden to explore the boutique stores or even catch a show. When you hire a car in Enfield, all this and more is within easy reach.
