South Carolina not only has a huge variety of attractions and activities to offer, but also a diversity of landscapes, from the dramatic Blue Ridge Mountains in the west to the picture-perfect Atlantic coastline in the east.
Explore the ultimate Southern Belle
No place sums up southern charm quite like Charleston. Nicknamed the ‘Holy City’, it is without a doubt one of the most beautiful cities in the world and whether you’re here to soak up the sun at one of its glorious beaches or explore the city’s rich history, you’re in for a treat.
You can stroll through the elegant French Quarter, with its distinctive cobblestone streets and pastel-coloured antebellum houses, experience life in the Lowcountry centuries ago at Charles Towne Landing State Historic Site or explore the fascinating St. Philips graveyard. Across the water is Fort Sumter, where the first shots of the American Civil War echoed in 1861.
For a spot of retail therapy, head for the popular City Market, one of the city’s best shopping and eating areas. Then sample some authentic southern cooking at one of the many award-winning restaurants such as Hominy Grill and Husk.
If you happen to be visiting in late spring, don't miss the Spoleto USA festival, the city’s biggest arts event which features opera, theatre, dance and jazz performances around the city.
The coast with the most
To the north of Charleston sits the Grand Strand, a 96km stretch of white sandy beaches famed for its pristine golf courses. There are over 100 courses along this beautiful part of South Carolina coastline, and it is here where you can find Myrtle Beach, one of America’s top beach vacation destinations.
Head to Murrells Inlet, known as the ‘Seafood Capital of South Carolina’ and tantalise your taste buds with the state’s freshest shrimp, Atlantic oysters and succulent crab. Close by you’ll find Pawleys Island, one of South Carolina’s oldest summer resorts, with unspoiled beaches and beautiful oceanfront accommodation.
The sparkling jewel in South Carolina’s coastal crown is Hilton Head Island, one of the Palmetto State’s most luxurious beach destinations. Like much of the coastal region, it’s liberally sprinkled with world-class golf courses, but there are also top-notch restaurants, great shopping hotspots and vanilla-coloured beaches as far as the eye can see.
There’s cultural interest, here too; you can learn all about the Gullah people, whose distinct culture and language are still preserved today.
Mountain highs
For something completely different, head for the hills with a trip to the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains in Upstate South Carolina. This is the perfect setting to enjoy some great hiking adventures in Table Rock, Caesars Head and Oconee state parks.
You can even plan a trek to the summit of Sassafras Mountain, the highest point in the Palmetto State. If all that sounds too energetic, head for Devils Fork State Park, where you can enjoy excellent year-round fishing from the edge of the crystal-clear Lake Jocassee.
Car rental in South Carolina opens up one of the US’ most stunning and enthralling states, whether you’re seeking out history, culture or some of the most beautiful coastal retreats around.
